The Grand Valley Shakespeare Festival’s touring arm, the award-winning Bard to Go (BTG) programme, presents Lovestruck as part of the Shakespeare in Paradise Student Outreach Programme.
Over the past six years, Bard to Go has visited numerous countries: Canada for the Liverpool International Theatre Festival in Halifax, Nova Scotia, in 2010, Italy in 2009, China in 2008, and Jamaica in 2005. Bard to Go won the “Best in Festival” at the Sapperlot Youth Theatre Festival in Brixen, Italy, in 2009.
The 2011 Bard to Go production, Lovestruck, will feature entertaining, recognizable characters (as they would have been to their Elizabethan audiences) in various scenes from Shakespearean plays on the theme of love. We hope to engage our 21st century student audiences with the beauty and relevance of these plays in provocative and fun ways. BTG will tickle student audiences into wanting more Shakespeare—into wanting to see the whole play, into wanting to do some Shakespearean acting even! Scenes featured in this year’s play, Lovestruck, are excerpted from A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Merchant of Venice, The Tempest, The Taming of the Shrew, The Comedy of Errors, and Hamlet. We’re taking off the kid gloves, and jumping right in to the richness of the comedy, the fullness of the tragedy, the delight of the language, and the possibilities of play.
