Kayla Lockhart-Edwards to be honoured

On September 30th, 2011, the third annual Shakespeare in Paradise theatre festival will open at the Dundas with a special performance of Dis We Tings. This performance is dedicated to the memory of Kayla Lockhart-Edwards, one of the originators of the work. On hand for this celebration will be her immediate family and the co-originator of Dis We Tings, Derek Burrows.

Kayla, as many Bahamians will know, made it her life’s work to promote all things Bahamian, and in 1989 she and Derek presented to the then chairman of the Dundas, Winston Saunders, an idea for a production celebrating things Bahamian. Winston brought in Nicolette Bethel to write the script and we are now on the fourth Dis We Tings production in the franchise.

Each year Shakespeare in Paradise produces a signature Bahamian work, and it’s only fitting that by doing Dis We Tings this year that we take some time to remember Kayla for all that she did to promote The Bahamas and all things Bahamian.

Kayla is my aunt and I was also one of the original members of the “Dis We Tings” Production – 1 and 2. I commend you on all your efforts to keep the great Bahamian drama artist alive with the reproduction of the awesome plays and musicals!!! It is with great pleasure that I will again attend some of your productions and I thank you so much for thinking of and honouring my Aunt Kayla….Thanks again and keep up the awesome job!!!!

Kayla Edwards taught me breathing control when i had to sing for a commercial and then gave me a minor part in dis we tings 2 and inspired my love for the stage and my culture. It is wonderful to see her get her rewards. Wish she was here to get them in person
